GLST251: Cultural Perspectives, Youth and Resilience in Guatemala (3 credit hours)
During a 3-week May term in Guatemala, learn first-hand about the persistent social problems facing Guatemala’s youth as well as the determination and resilience of committed young adults who are helping to meet those challenges and prepare the way for a better future.
Course Overview
What you can expect to see/learn/do. . .
- Learn through field trips, guest speakers, a homestay, readings, journaling, personal reflection.
- Learn about the way a war-torn past continues to haunt attempts at democratic change.
- Explore Guatemala City; also spend several days in a small Mayan village near Lake Atitlan.
- Tour a coffee farm; meet contemporary artists; climb a volcano.
- Carry out a service assignment in a cross-cultural context.
